July 1, 1842 - Graduates from West Point
with a brevet to 2nd Lieutenant, 4th Infantry.
1842-1843 - In garrison at Jefferson Barracks, MO.
1844-1845 - Frontier Duty at Natchitoches, LA (Camp Salubrity).
1845 - In garrison at Ft. Marion, FL; and in the
Military Occupation of Texas. March 4 - Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant,
8th Infantry.
1846 - War with Mexico, being engaged at the Battle
of Palo Alto, May 9; Battle of Resaca-de-la-Palma, May 9; and the
Battle of Monterey, September 21-23.
1847 - February 23 - Promoted to 1st Lieutenant,
8th Infantry. Thereafter, he was engaged in the Siege of Vera Cruz,
March 9-29; Battle of Cerro Gordo, April 17-18; Capture of San Antonio,
August 20; Battle of Contreras, August 19-20; and Battle of Churubusco,
August 20. He was brevetted Captain, August 20, for gallant
and meritorious conduct in the Battles of Contreras and Churubusco.
He was further engaged in the Battle of Molino del Rey, September
8, winning a brevet to Major, for gallant and meritorious service.
Longstreet was engaged in the Storming of Chapultepec, September
13, where he was severely wounded in the Assault of the fortified
convent.
After
the war he married Maria Louisa Garland. Meanwhile, his cousin,
Julia Dent, married her longtime beau, Ulysses S. Grant with Longstreet
in the wedding party.
June 8, 1847-July 1, 1849 - Longstreet served as
Adjutant, 8th Infantry.
1848-1849 - In garrison at Jefferson Barracks,
MO.
1849 - Frontier Duty at San Antonio, TX.
- Establishes Ft. Lincoln, TX.
1849-1851 - San Antonio, TX, as Chief of Commissariat
of the Department of Texas.
1851-1852 - At Ft. Martin Scott, TX.
1852 - Scouting.
- At Camp Johnson, TX.
1852-1853 - At Ft. Chadbourne, TX.
December 7, 1852 - Promoted to Captain, 8th Infantry.
1853 - Continued on Frontier Duty Scouting.
1854, 1855-1858 - Commanding Ft. Bliss, TX.
July
19, 1858 - Promoted to Major, Staff, Paymaster, and
served as Paymaster, July 19, 1858-June 1, 1861.
1858-1859 - Ft. Leavenworth, KS.
1859-1861 - Albuquerque, NM. Resigned commission
June 1.
